24-hour movement guidelines launched

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has launched the 24 Hour Movement Guidelines for the Early Years, based on similar guidelines developed in Canada.

The Guidelines provide evidence-based advice for a healthy day, integrating physical activity, sedentary behaviour (including limits to screen time), and sleep. Recommendations are included for the early years, including for infants (<1year), toddlers (1-2 years) and preschoolers (3-5 years).

The Australian Guidelines also outline what a typical day for a baby, toddler or pre-schooler would look like, including advice on screen time, active play, time spent sitting and lying down, and the ideal amount of sleep. This information can be useful for early childhood educators when developing routines and activities for children in their care.

Guidance for Services

Services might find the Guidelines to be a useful resource when considering Quality Area 2 – Children’s Health and Safety under the National Quality Standard. Quality Area 2 deals with children’s need for sleep and rest, as well as physical activity through planned and spontaneous experience.
