Ngroo ‘Walking Together’ program
In the spirit of fostering inclusive and culturally appropriate best practice, the NSW Department of Education has partnered with Ngroo Education Incorporated to provide the ‘Walking Together’ program.
So far in 2017, more than 140 early childhood education services have participated in the program, with very positive outcomes reported including increased enrolments for Aboriginal children and greater staff skills and awareness.
“After the first two parts of the Walking Together program our staff are already feeling more confident,” said one service director.
In 2017-18 the program is expanding to provide 235 places for community preschools and long day care services in NSW.
Designed to help community preschools and long day care centres build positive relationships with their local Aboriginal community, the program helps reduce barriers that may prevent Aboriginal children accessing centres.
Walking Together combines cultural education training, a resource kit, an action plan and Ngroo’s staff support to help services respectfully engage with their local Aboriginal community. The program is also designed to increase enrolments so each child will have the opportunity to attend early childhood education for 600 hours per year.
Not-for-profit community preschools and long day care centres in NSW wishing to be involved can submit an expression of interest with NSW Department of Education through Smarty Grants.
Applications will be accepted until Friday 16 February 2018.
