Aboriginal scholarships enhance learning for children of the future
More Aboriginal educators will be supported to progress their tertiary studies and further strengthen leadership and expertise in the early childhood sector, with the recent announcement of the latest round of Aboriginal scholarship recipients.
These scholarships, which are valued at up to $20,000 each, were awarded to support Aboriginal educators to obtain bachelor-level qualifications through an early childhood education teaching degree.
The Aboriginal scholarships program supports the sector by making available more qualified early childhood teachers equipped with genuine links to culture and family, to help create culturally aware services that meet the needs of Aboriginal children attending early childhood education.
“Increasing the number of Aboriginal early childhood teachers in NSW will help ensure that Aboriginal perspectives are embedded in early childhood education, and that preschools are welcoming and inclusive places for all children,” a department spokesperson said.
The NSW Government’s investment in the Aboriginal scholarships program is a component of the Early Childhood Education Workforce Strategy, and highlights the department’s commitment to ensuring more Aboriginal educators are encouraged to pursue higher education to obtain tertiary qualifications in their profession.
Raising awareness of this program, including the outcomes for the tertiary scholarship recipients, is an important pillar in highlighting the essential work of educators and teachers within the community in supporting young children and their families in NSW.
Educators working in services across NSW were invited to apply for the scholarships during term 4 2018, and submissions were assessed in accordance with the program guidelines.
The scholarships go beyond financial assistance, with the NSW Department of Education supporting scholarship recipients throughout their studies by linking them with mentoring programs and other support.
Future rounds of NSW Government scholarships will be announced to the sector as they become available.
