Bushfire information

Important information for services, parents and carers on the impact of bushfires on children’s education and care services.

11 February 2020

The Early Childhood Education Directorate (ECED) is aware of the widespread devastation caused to communities around NSW by the current bushfire crisis. We are committed to supporting the education and care sector both during the crisis and in the recovery phase. For specific information relating to your service please contact ECED directly.

For families

While services are required to report closures to the Department there can be a significant delay in this information coming through, particularly when communications are impacted by fires. For this reason the Department does not publish a list of service closures as it may not be up to date information.

Families should remain in contact with their service providers and follow the advice of local emergency services and service staff.

If a service has suffered fire damage families can contact the Department for assistance with finding alternative care.

All enquiries relating to the impact of bushfires on children's education and care services should be directed to the Early Childhood Education Directorate's Information and Enquiries hotline on 1800 619 113.

For services

Services should monitor local conditions and follow the directions of emergency services. This includes family day care educators operating in affected areas. Up-to-date information about current fire emergencies can be found on the NSW Rural Fire Service website.

Services are required to notify the Department of any closures or damage to premises. While the regulations require this to be done within 24 hours the Department understands that this may not always be practical or possible. Services can contact the Department by phone or email if they do not have access to NQA ITS.

The Department will work with services who experience damage to expedite applications for temporary relocations and staffing or space waivers. NSW funding enquiries should be directed to the Department's hotline.

Information relating to commonwealth funding and CCS is available on the Australian Government Department of Education website.

The Department is working with services to identify and deliver ongoing support to ensure services are able to return to normal operations and begin the recovery process as soon as possible. Support initiatives will be communicated as they become available.

A selection of wellbeing resources for early childhood services and staff who have been impacted by bushfires is also available.

All enquiries relating to the impact of bushfires on children's education and care services should be directed to the Early Childhood Education Directorate's Information and Enquiries hotline on 1800 619 113.
