End of year message from the Secretary
Georgina Harrisson, Secretary of the Department of Education, shares an end of year message.
16 December 2022

As we move closer towards the end of 2022, I want to acknowledge the work and commitment of the entire Early Childhood Education and Care sector in educating and supporting our youngest learners.
It has been a significant year for early childhood education with the announcement of the Early Years Commitment in June – demonstrating a genuine and long-term focus on improving outcomes for every child in NSW.
We look forward to working with families, educators and communities as momentum gathers on the Early Years Commitment, particularly on key initiatives like the Childcare and Economic Opportunity Fund, Universal pre-Kindergarten and supporting the incredible educators who support children and families every day.
The health, safety and wellbeing of children in NSW will always be a priority for the department so I'm pleased the quality of ECEC services across the state has increased since 2022, with 87.6% of services now rated as Meeting the National Quality Standard or above.
This year has brought a number of challenging circumstances, including the ongoing COVID-19 response and floods that have impacted communities across the state. I have been consistently impressed by the resilience and dedication educators and early childhood teachers have continued to demonstrate, providing quality education and care for children, and delivering innovative practices to support families, communities and each other through this period.
As you reflect on the past year, please take a moment to celebrate what you have all achieved together in your service and with colleagues and friends.
I hope you have the opportunity this holiday season to take the time to rest and recharge, ready to return for an exciting 2023.
Georgina Harrisson
