Information architecture
Information architecture (IA) focuses on organising, structuring, and labelling content in an effective and sustainable way. A good IA supports findability and discoverability of content on a website. A well-structured and labelled IA is meaningful and matches the user's mental model. It also relies on well-designed navigation that looks clickable and is placed in a logical and expected location.
Bringing websites together
Education.nsw.gov.au brings our 4 largest information based websites into a single space. It also connects to other websites, such as NSW public school websites through search.
The approach
To create a great IA we need to consider how our department information fits together and how items relate to each other. We are using a user-centred-design process, where we test, learn and refine the labels and groupings of content to improve usability. We have been through multiple major iterations so far and are continuing to test and learn as we add more content to the website.
