The NSW Schools Parent App has new features making it even easier for parents and carers to stay in touch with their child’s school. This is a guide on how to make the most out of your parent app.
When you first launch the app in iOS, you will be prompted to add a school. You will then be presented with a number of onboarding screens to educate you about the app’s functions. [In Android, this prompt will follow the onboarding screens.] The sections are:
News feed: An index of the latest activity from the school(s) you are following.
Calendar: View a calendar of past and future events (weekly or monthly).
Newsletters: All newsletters from the school(s) you are following.
My schools: Contact details and information on your chosen school(s). You can also change school settings, colour, and notifications.
Push notifications: Let school(s) notify you of news and events by tapping the ‘Okay’ button.
Welcome to the Parent App demonstration.
The first thing that occurs once you launch the app is that you'll be asked to add a school, so we're just going to add The Rivers Secondary College and, at this point in time, you're able to add another school if you choose, or you can click 'ok'.
Then you are presented with a couple of onboarding screens. These screens are essentially used as a mechanism to educate the parent, to let them know what sort of functions are available to them when they use the app.
So we've got news feeds from the school. We've got the calendar to track the events that the school might publish, the newsletters that they publish, as well and, of course, 'My schools', which is the place where you will go and manage the schools.
So you can either add additional schools or remove them as you wish. We've also then got push notifications so they will be notified when there are updates with regards to events or a newsletter.
Also, more importantly it also has the capability to push notifications when a school is operational or non-operational. So we're just going to click 'ok' here or 'allow'. I should say at this point you are then presented with the home screen which is essentially the news section. That's the landing section you'll see here that we've got a couple of different news items that the school has published and you'll see that there's bare bones information which will then, if you tap, it will take you to the school's website because this app is a companion app to the Schools Website Service.
Let's go back to the app. I'm just going to click 'close' or if I wanted to, I could also share this news item. At this point in time I can also do a little bit more configuration to filter. So here what I'm going to do is I'm going to start personalising my news feeds and if I want, I can then filter the feeds based on the school year. If I just want to get year eight, just enable/disable. I'm just going to close that.
Up the top right you'll see what's known as the meatballs icon that allows you to then do additional filtering as well based on information that is published, just from the school or information that is published from the Department of Education. I'm going to leave them as is. Close that.
Now we come to the calendar. Within the calendar you'll actually then see items that the school itself has published specifically around events so I'm just going to click on the 10th.
When I tap that I then get additional information then I have the ability to share this event which then just brings up the native sharing panel for the respective platform. I'm just going to close that.
I can also then go to the venue which essentially is going to connect to the maps function and here we've got the maps. It's going to go back to the app and more importantly, being an event, you want to add it to your calendar.
So I'm just going to add to my calendar because this is the first time I'm doing this, it's going to ask me for some permission.
So I'm just going to grant it now. If I go to my calendar you'll actually see that it has now been added and there's the item there.
Let's go back to the app. I'm just going to close that and now we're just going to look at Newsletters. So here it's gone and looked at the different newsletters that have been published and it displays them in order.
Again at the top I can also filter if I want to base on the different feeds I'm just going to close that but here what we're going to do is just tap on one of the newsletters it goes and retrieves the newsletter and then you can see that it's now displayed.
Let's zoom in as well I can actually read it a little bit better. I can also share this item as well.
I'm just going to close that then we get to My schools which is where we start to look at the school management. And you see at the top that there is a green tick. This is essentially an easy mechanism for a parent to know whether the school is operational or not.
And if I tap through then I can actually get additional details, so if I want to look at the school website I can click on that and it will take me to the website or I can actually email or call or go to a map from here.
Further down you'll see that I also have the capability to enable push notifications specifically for that school but what we're going to do now is we're going to add another school. I'm just going to go add again, so here I'm just going to add Bangalow Public School.
Let's go continue and there it displays it accordingly and of course you get to see the operational status. In the event that the status does change what will happen is there'll be a push notification that is sent to the home screen and at the same time the icon that is displayed will change to a warning symbol here.
If I then go to Bangalow, I can see the additional details for that school. Again, I can filter the push notifications specifically for that school if I want to. And what I'm going to just do here is I'm just going to remove the school just so you can see that there's a remove function in case that you no longer need to have the information from the school anymore. So it's going to remove, that school stays as it is, and that completes the demonstration.

Note: The following steps and naming vary slightly between iOS and Android versions. For more information, go to our FAQ page. You can also view the video above.
Setting up your school(s)
When you launch the app in iOS, you will be prompted to add a school. [Note: In Android, this prompt will follow the onboarding screens.]
Type in the name of the school, eg: The Rivers Secondary College. You’ll be asked if you wish to add another school or tap ok. Tap ‘Ok, let’s go’.
Repeat process to add a second or third school. There is no limit to the number of schools that can be added.
This section holds your school’s news items. If you tap on an item (and the ‘Global’ symbol at the top right corner for Android) you will go to the school's website for the full article.
The app is a companion app to the School's Website Service. You can also share news items by tapping the ‘Share’ symbol.
Personalise your school feeds
Personalise your feed by tapping on the 'Filter' symbol at the top right corner. You can filter feeds by school year by enabling or disabling the year.
By tapping the 'Meatball' symbol at the top corner ('Triangle' on Android), you can do additional filtering such as viewing information published only from the school or the Department of Education.
Here you find items that the school has published about upcoming events. By tapping on the date, you will see a list of event(s) on that date.
Click on the item to show details of the event including a link to a map of the location, and the functionality to add it to your personal calendar.
Find newsletters published by the school which are displayed in date order. Tap on a newsletter to open. There is also a Share and Zoom function for easier viewing.
In this section you will see your chosen school(s) and its operational status (a tick or “warning” symbol). Note: If status changes, you get a notification on your home screen.
By tapping on the chosen school you get details such as phone number, email, directions, and website URL. You also have the option to enable push notifications at the bottom of the screen.
From this section, you can also add schools or remove them by tapping on the ‘Remove school’ button at the bottom of the screen.
