The NSW Education Parent App has new features making it even easier for parents and carers to stay in touch with their child’s school. This is a guide, including a video, about how to make the most out of your parent app for iOS users.
Download the app in the Apple Store.
[Narration]
To download the NSW Education Parent App tap on the App Store. In the search bar type in 'NSW Education Parent App'. Press 'Search' to find the app. Tap 'Get' to install the app.
From here you can either tap 'Open' to launch the app or you can find the app on your home screen. To launch the app tap the icon.
We are now going to set up your school. Once you've successfully added your school you can add another school, or tap 'Ok, let's go'. You are then presented with a series of onboarding screens. These screens demonstrate the functions of the app. Simply tap 'Next' to move through these functions. When presented with the 'Stay notified' screen we recommend tapping 'Ok'. This will ensure that you get access to valuable push notifications. When you see the notifications dialogue tap 'Allow'.
When presented with 'Connect your Service NSW’ account you have the ability to connect your Service NSW account should you have one. This will enable future Integrations with the parent app.
In this example we press 'Skip' as we can connect our account later in settings.
You are now presented with the landing screen. The landing screen is always the news screen. To read a news article tap the summary. A detailed view of that article will be presented. You can also view that same article via the School Website Service by tapping the global icon. It will then launch your browser and display that same article on the school's website. We will now switch back to the app. By tapping 'Close' you will go back to the news landing screen.
If this is the first time you are seeing the news screen you will see a blue dialogue at the top which allows you to personalise your school feeds. Let's do this by tapping the school. You will then be presented with a number of filters by year group. By enabling or disabling you can filter which years you would like news from. We are going to leave it at its default settings. Tap 'Close' to go back to the news landing screen.
You can access additional filters by tapping what is known as the meatball menu icon also seen as three horizontal dots that allow you to filter news articles from the NSW Department of Education and the schools that you are following.
To access the calendar tap the calendar menu item. The current date is highlighted and you will also see dates that have school events scheduled. To see a detailed view of the event tap the summary. From this detailed view you will have the ability to share that same event using the share icon or you can add it to your calendar. Tap ‘Add to your calendar’ to add that event to your personal calendar on your phone. If this is the first time you're using the calendar function you will be prompted to give permission to access the calendar. Tap 'Ok'. If you go to your calendar you'll see the event already added in there at the same time you can remove that item from the calendar should you wish.
To switch back to your app just switch back to the application as per normal. To close the calendar event tap 'Close'. You will then be taken back to the calendar landing screen.
To access newsletters, tap the newsletters menu item. You will see a list of newsletters published by the schools that you follow. Tap the newsletter you would like to read and then depending on your school settings it might display automatically or open in your browser. When you have finished reading simply press ‘Done’ or switch back to the application.
To access school details tap the ‘My schools’ menu item. Here you will see the operational status of the school, the services the school provides and essential apps relevant to that school.
Please be aware that the options from school to school will differ depending on what has been set up by that school. If you are following multiple schools tap the horizontal dots on the top right also known as the meatball menu icon. Here you will be able to switch to a different school.
Now let's look at some of the options in detail.
‘School details' will allow you to view contact and location information for your school.
'School vouchers' opens the Service NSW website where you can apply for 'Back to School NSW' vouchers.
'Essential apps' are apps recommended by the Department of Education that schools are actively using. The school in our example has Everyday Maths and Sentral listed. Clicking on Sentral will open the Sentral login screen in your browser.
Going back to the parent app you can see a 'More links' section underneath 'Essential apps'. This is where you can see additional links to pages on the school website or external websites that your school has deemed relevant for you.
To access your app settings tap on the settings menu item. Here you will be able to control app and user preferences. You can also sign in or sign out of your Service NSW account which we recommend having enabled. You can also choose to remove a school. Removing a school will remove all news, newsletters and calendar information.
Further down you can also add additional schools by tapping 'Add new school' you will see the new school screen just like you did when you set up the app for the first time. We will select a school. The school has now been added underneath. You can now manage its preferences and further down we will see ‘Personalisation’. Under ‘Personalisation’ you can manage your school news feeds which we have discussed earlier in this video.
