To download the New South Wales Education Parent App tap the Play Store. In the search bar type in ‘New South Wales Education Parent App’. Tap ‘Install’.
From here you can either tap ‘Open’ to launch the app, or you can find the app within your installed apps. To launch the app tap the icon.
As this is the first time you're using the app you will be prompted to grant access to your calendar. We suggest you tap ‘Allow’. You are then presented with a series of onboarding screens. These screens will demonstrate the functions of the app.
Simply swipe across to see the functions. When presented with the stay notified screen we recommend tapping ‘Ok’. This will ensure that you get access to valuable push notifications.
When presented with 'Connect your Service NSW account’ you have the ability to connect your Service NSW account should you have one. This will enable future integrations with the parent app. In this example we press ‘Skip’ as we can connect our account later in settings.
When you get to the 'Let's set up your school' screen you have the ability to enter the school or schools that you want to follow and get information from. We have successfully added a school. We have the ability to add another school or we can just click 'Ok'.
In this example we press 'Ok'. You are now presented with the landing screen. The landing screen is always the News screen. To read a news article tap the summary. A detailed view of that article will be presented.
You can also view that same article via the School Website Service by tapping the global icon. It will then launch your browser and display that same article on the school's website. We will now switch back to the app. Here you also have the ability to share that same article using the share function. Tap the share icon on the top right to be presented with a couple of different share options. To get back to the news landing screen tap 'X'.
If this is the first time you've ever looked at the news screen or you haven't set up the school filtering, tap 'Let's do it'. Then you'll be presented with the schools that you are following. Tap the school and you will be presented with additional filtering options by year group. For now we are going to leave this at its default settings.
Tap 'X' to get back to the news landing screen. You can get back to that filtering screen by tapping the three horizontal lines that resemble a triangle. You can access additional filtering by tapping three vertical dots on the far right also known as the kebab menu. Tapping that allows you to filter news articles from the Department of Education and the schools you are following.
To access the calendar tap what is known as the burger menu also seen as three horizontal lines on the top left, then tap 'Calendar'. The current date is highlighted and you'll also see dates that have school events scheduled. To see a detailed view of the event tap the summary. From this detailed view you will have the ability to share using the native share function of the app.
You will also be able to access some map information by looking at the map icon or more importantly be able to add the event to your calendar. Tap 'Add to your calendar' to add that event to your personal calendar on your phone.
If you go to your calendar you will see the event already added in there. At the same time you can remove that item from the calendar should you wish. To get back to the calendar screen tap the 'X' icon.
To access newsletters tap the burger menu on the top left then tap 'Newsletters'. You'll see a list of newsletters for the schools that you follow. Tap the newsletter you would like to read and then depending on your school settings it might display automatically or download it to your phone. To view the actual newsletter tap the newsletter again and it is then displayed. When you have finished reading switch back to the app and then you are presented with the newsletter screen.
To access 'My schools’ tap the burger icon on the top left, then 'My schools', then the school you want to see the details of. This is the school landing screen. Here you will see the operational status, the services the school provides, and the essential apps relevant to that school.
Please be aware that the options from school to school will differ depending on what has been set up by that school. If you have additional schools that you are following tap the vertical dots on the top right also known as the kebab icon. Here you will be able to switch to a different school.
Now let's look at some of the options in detail. 'School details' will allow you to view contact and location information for your school. 'School vouchers' opens the Service NSW website where you can apply for 'Back to School NSW' vouchers.
Essential apps are apps recommended by the Department of Education that schools are actively using. This school has added links to Everyday Maths and Sentral. Clicking Sentral will open the Sentral login screen in your browser.
Going back to the parent app you can see a 'More links' section underneath 'Essential apps'. This is where you can see additional links to pages on the school website or external websites that your school has deemed relevant for you.
To access your app settings tap the burger menu on the left and then tap 'Settings'. Here you will be able to control the app and user preferences. You can also sign in or sign out of your Service NSW account. You can also choose to remove a school. Removing a school will remove all news, newsletters and calendar information. You can also add additional schools by tapping 'Add a new school' and typing in the school's name. It then connects to that school and all the additional news, newsletters and calendar events will be displayed.
