Independent review of the 2025 Opportunity Class and Selective High School Placement Testing
The NSW Government commissioned an independent review into the 2025 Opportunity Class and Selective High School Placement Testing completed by respected education academic Dr Michele Bruniges AM.
The review examined the issues that caused disruptions to the 2025 opportunity class and selective high school placement tests at 3 large Sydney venues.
The disruptions on the first day of testing resulted in the Department of Education shifting subsequent testing to smaller venues, managed by department staff.
Dr Bruniges made 12 recommendations in her report, including that the department consider:
- Holding 1 placement test session per day in local schools, with a maximum of 300 students in large school test centres and 180 in small test centres.
- Improving communication, governance and quality assurance processes.
The NSW Government has accepted all recommendations of the Dr Bruniges' review, with the 2026 tests to be held at smaller testing centres and logistics to be overseen directly by the NSW Department of Education.
