Educational Services review

A review of the Educational Services division gathered feedback from school leaders and stakeholders to inform a plan to better support NSW public schools.

In the second half of 2017, the department’s Educational Services division conducted a comprehensive review of the support and services it offers to schools, principals and teachers.

The division was created in April 2017 to provide a dedicated focus to the policies, support and services that NSW schools need to improve student learning and wellbeing. Our first step was to seek feedback from educational leaders as to what services were working well, and what could be improved.

More than 1,200 principals and nearly 800 other stakeholders provided feedback through surveys and focus groups. Their insights were combined with local and international research and our own ambitions for a more productive workplace to identify four improvement themes:

  • quality teaching to every student
  • tailored support to improve every school
  • prioritising teaching time
  • leading an improvement journey.

These four priority areas underpin a transformation that Educational Services is now embarking on to improve the support it provides to NSW public schools. For full details, download the report Striving for Excellence: A plan to better support NSW public schools (PDF 2276.52KB).

The new direction aligns with the department’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022, which keeps children and young people at the centre of all the department’s decision-making.
