About this report

The School item analysis (writing) report shows school performance against each criterion in the writing rubric, compared to the State (NSW public schools).

Note: The writing rubric is applied across years 3 to 9. The score description is mapped to the earliest appearance in the syllabus. Teaching strategies are mapped to the syllabus outcome.

Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 complete the writing assessment online and are presented with one of two writing prompts. Year 3 students are exposed to only one prompt.

How to use this report

The School item analysis (writing) report focuses on writing only.

Select the Assessment school, Assessment, Assessment year, and Criteria.

Optional slicers allow you to analyse performance by test version.

Writing score distribution – school compared to State

This chart shows the performance of the school compared to the State for a selected criterion. The chart shows the distribution by score and syllabus outcome. Note each criterion has a different maximum score.

Hover over a column to see the percentage of students achieving that score as well as the number of students in the school and state achieving that score.

Online writing rubric

This table displays an overall description of each criterion and a description of each score. The score description is mapped to the earliest appearance in the syllabus. Teaching strategies are mapped to the syllabus outcome.

Two test versions are applicable, and the results are shown based on the Test version selected. If no specific Test version is selected (Prompt 1 or Prompt 2), scores of both test versions are shown.

Student - writing response details

This table shows how individual students scored on each criterion. Sort the table by score to group students performing at a similar level.

You can view a whole cohort or use the slicers to select a scholastic year, specific group type or specific group, including custom groups or timetabled classes.

Scout in Practice - For school leaders

What should I look for?

  • Explore how the school has performed across criteria in NAPLAN writing.
  • Consider both the score distribution and the maximum score available for each criterion. This may help identify broad areas for attention, differentiated teaching or further investigation.
  • Select the 'Teaching strategy' link to find department resources to support teaching the skills described.

Tips for analysis:

Writing score distribution – school compared to State
  • For each criterion, consider where most of the cohort is scoring. Compare this to the State.
  • Across the criteria, identify areas of strength and areas for development.
  • Consider how many students were exposed to each of the two prompts and compare the performance of students from prompt 1 to prompt 2. Are there any differences?
  • Find the link to the stimulus at the top of the page.
Online writing rubric
  • Consider where most students score. Is this stage appropriate?
Student - writing response details
  • Which students would benefit from an extension? In which areas?
  • Which students would benefit from additional support? In which areas?
