About this report

The Cohort proficiency reports show the percentage of students in each NAPLAN proficiency level for a selected assessment and domain. The pattern of results can be compared to the Statistically Similar School Group (SSSG) and the State (NSW public schools).

The Cohort proficiency: Equity view shows these results broken down by four equity measures: Aboriginality, English as an additional language/dialect (EAL/D), Gender and Socio-Economic Advantage (SEA).

Users can view results school-wide or use optional demographic filters to select student groups.

Executive Directors and Directors, Educational Leadership can also view results aggregated at the principal network and directorate level as appropriate to their role.

The Equity view is recommended when comparing performance across equity groups for a specific assessment and domain.

Note: This report is based on the assessment school. It displays all students who participated in the NAPLAN assessment at the school.

How to use the report

Select the Assessment School, Assessment, Domain and Assessment year.

Optional slicers allow you to analyse the performance of selected subsets of students. These slicers include Aboriginality, EAL/D, Gender, SEA Quarter (Socio-Economic Advantage), Enrolment type group and Enrolment type, and NCCD adjustment and NCCD category. Using these slicers will reduce the amount of information displayed on the screen.

Click Reset all slicers to clear selections.

If there is no data for the selected school, please check the slicers to ensure you have selected an assessment that was completed at your school.

Add or remove SSSG and State comparisons to the chart by toggling on the SSSG or State buttons.

Select an alignment marker from the list provided. The alignment marker makes it easier to compare the segments across SSSG and State. Users can set the alignment to:

• All levels
• Exempt/NAS
• NAS/Developing
• Developing/Strong
• Strong/Exceeding.

Some selections will result in notifications in the Commentary box to the right of the chart.

There are two types of notifications:

Hovering the cursor over a segment of the visual provides further details about the data, including:

• Proficiency level
• Percentage (%) of students in level
• Number (#) of students in level
• Total students.

What should I look for?

The Cohort proficiency: Equity view contains four charts, one for each equity measure. Each chart will contain a bar for each category in the equity measure, and additional bars when SSSG or State have been selected.

The four charts in this report are:

• Student proficiency percentages by Aboriginality
• Student proficiency percentages by EAL/D
• Student proficiency percentages by gender
• Student proficiency percentages by SEA quarter

Examples of analysis scenarios:

1. Look at the distribution of students across the proficiency levels for each category within the equity group. This may help identify broad areas for attention, differentiated teaching or further investigation to address equity gaps.
2. Look at the proportion of students in each proficiency level across categories in the equity measure. This may suggest areas where students may need intervention/support or extension/acceleration.
3. Look at the pattern of cohort performance compared to the SSSG and State.
4. Use caution when there are small numbers of students in the category of interest. The commentary box will usually show a warning when cohort sizes are small.

When triangulated with other data, this information may assist in identifying the success of current teaching strategies or interventions. It may also help to identify opportunities to support student learning in one or more specific domains. Assessing changes over time allows the evaluation of the success of programs to assist students in each equity group, and the evolving needs of students based on their demographic background.
