The Welcome Experience is a new service supporting essential workers and their families who are thinking of moving or have made the move to a rural location. The service connects you and your family with local people and local resources to help you settle in and feel at home in your new community faster.

Placement details

Terms 1 - 4, 2025 (Applicants can request a shorter duration in their application).

Role description: The placement will be tailored depending on the skillset of the applicant. It will either be as a regular Primary classroom teacher with your own class or as a Gifted and Talented Teacher. The Gifted and Talented Teacher placement will plan and deliver appropriate educational programs for high-potential students across K-6 within a timetabled grouping and regular classroom teaching duties.

Desired candidate expertise:

  • Approval to teach K-6
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with all members of the school community.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and delivering high-quality, differentiated teaching and learning programs with an emphasis on student engagement.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement the Department’s Aboriginal education policy to enhance quality outcomes for all Aboriginal students.
  • Commitment to student wellbeing

Teacher Housing may be available (including shared options)

Private rentals are limited in Walgett. Lightning Ridge (50 mins drive) has some rental accommodation and cabin accommodation available.

Please note: Teacher Housing availability can depend upon a variety of factors, including vacancy status and potential priority offers to other staff with full time rural appointments. Teacher Housing Authority (THA) may not be able to confirm the allocation of properties until all applications have been received and processed. Applicants are encouraged to discuss property availability directly with THA. Participants of the Rural Experience Program are not eligible for the Housing Rental Subsidy but may rent a property (at market value) through the THA if available.

School details

Walgett Community College Primary School has 125 students K-6 and a small preschool. Staff and students are well supported with additional admin and in-class SLSOs.

The school is part of the Connected Communities strategy and is committed to providing a high-quality education for all students.

The school is well-resourced and has an extensive staff compliment to support student engagement and learning. Additional staff include Aboriginal Education Officers and Senior Leader Community Engagement to help facilitate home and school communication and family engagement.

The town is located 280km north of Dubbo and 200km west of Moree, both major rural centres with access to a wide range of services.
