Placement details

Terms 1 - 4, 2023 (Applicants can request a shorter duration in their application).

Role description: The successful applicant will be involved in delivering quality and differentiated literacy and numeracy teaching and learning experiences to 5 Kindergarten and Year 1 students (5 in total). He/she will also need to deliver all the other KLAs to Kinder/year 1. There is an expectation that he/she will jointly plan programs and units of work with the Teaching Principal.

Additional commitments: There may be situations where the successful applicant will be asked to accompany students on field trips, gala days at other schools and overnight excursions (to be negotiated).

Desired candidate expertise:

  • Approval to teach K-6
  • Demonstrated capacity or willingness to learn how to cater for the needs of all students in a K-1 classroom environment. Well-developed skills and knowledge of the teaching of phonics, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Thorough knowledge of and skills to deliver the K-2 Math Syllabus content.
  • Willingness to participate in relevant professional learning to maintain and update skill sets and to address the School Improvement Plan.

Accommodation details

There is a 2 bedroom fully furnished house currently available through teacher housing. The house could be solely occupied by the successful applicant and their family if necessary. The house has a reasonably sized backyard and is one block from the school.

Please note: Teacher Housing availability can depend upon a variety of factors, including vacancy status and potential priority offers to other staff with full time rural appointments. Teacher Housing Authority (THA) may not be able to confirm allocation of properties until all applications have been received and processed. Applicants are encouraged to discuss property availability directly with THA. Participants of the Rural Experience Program are not eligible for the Housing Rental Subsidy but may rent a property (at market value) through the THA if available.

School details

Urana Public School is located on Wiradjuri land in southern NSW in the Riverina region, in the small rural township of Urana. There are 12 student enrolments from Kindergarten to Year 6 in 2022.

Urana PS regularly joins with other nearby small schools and central schools to participate in carnivals, performances, workshops and engagement activities. We pride ourselves in providing diverse opportunities including sports gala days, science fairs, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) camps, musical performances and excursions. A school chaplain has been employed 2 days per week and runs engaging after school activities as well as integrated wellbeing programs.

The school community is focused on providing students with as many new experiences as possible in order for each individual child to discover their unique talents and to grow and develop as a whole person. There is also a strong focus on the delivery of high-quality literacy and numeracy teaching and learning activities in order for students to achieve excellence. We work together to create a positive school culture and foster valuable connections where the whole community can connect, succeed and thrive.

Urana is 111kms from Wagga Wagga, 126kms from Albury and 82kms from Corowa. The nearest town with a decent sized supermarket is Lockhart, which is a 46km drive. There is, however, a small supermarket in Urana, a Dr’s surgery, pharmacy, hospital, Post Office, café, Bowling Club, pub and the Urana Lake and Aquatic Centre. Urana is part of the Federation Council area.
